Tips for managing a team

For effective team management, it is important for the team leader to be more of a mentor to his team members than just a strict boss. Get to know each other well and ultimately understand your team members better. Gone are the days when people were afraid of their bosses. Now employees share a healthy relationship with their superiors and the comfort level has increased to a great extent.

Participate in team discussions

Ensure that each team member is willing and confident to participate in team discussions. Discussions are important, but be careful not to end up fighting each other. Suggestions must be welcome from every member. Invite everyone to an open forum and formulate strategies with each individual’s input in mind. Privacy should be suitable for everyone. The team goal must be clearly set and distributed among all team members. Everyone should be aware of their role and responsibility in the team.

Communication is essential

Communication between team members must be clear and transparent for effective team management. Each team member should receive the same information and should have easy access to superiors in case of any query.

Team members may not forward any information to anyone outside the team. Learn to keep things to yourself. It is unethical to share your professional secrets with others. Do not give out information or any confidential information. Although it’s unprofessional to share salary details, here you can check what the average salaries are in jobs that are the same or similar to yours.

Motivation is key

Team members must be regularly motivated. Appreciation is essential. If any team member has performed exceptionally well, praise them or even reward them. Performance appraisals, benefits, incentives, trophies, and awards are key to motivating team members to do even better next time. Avoid criticizing any one member of your team, but give them group direction for future projects.

Loose conversations, blame games, and dirty politics should not find a place within the team. They spoil the environment and people lose interest in their work and organization. If you find out something about someone, it’s better to talk to them face to face, or simply ignore them.

Create a positive environment

It is easy to create a team, but it is actually relatively difficult to connect team members and even make them work. Team management techniques help strengthen the bond between employees and create an environment where they can trust each other. People actually become friends and start working together as a result of team management activities.
